Editing multi-channel audio in Final Cut Pro

This tutorial discusses how to bring a multi-channel export from DVDxDV Pro into Final Cut Pro.

  • Locate the files that were created with DVDxDV Pro. In this example, we are using the output from a 5.1 sound track. There are seven files that were created by DVDxDV, myMovi.C.aiff, myMovi.L.aiff, myMovi.lfe.aiff, myMovi.Lr.aiff, myMovi.R.aiff, myMovi.Rr.aiff, and myMovie.mov. These seven files correspond to separate channels in the 5.1 audio sound track.

  • Open Final Cut Pro and locate the "Sequence Settings" menu item.
  • In the "Settings" dialog, click on the "Audio Outputs" tab. This dialog allows you to specify the number of output channels for Final Cut Pro. Since we have six audio files to import, we will need at least 6 channels. In this example, we are using eight channels.

  • Change the "Outputs" pull down to the desired number of channels

  • After changing the "Outputs" tab, you will see the new channels displayed below.

  • Change these channels from the "Stereo" to "Dual Mono".

  • Once you've made the changes, click "OK" to close the "Settings" dialog. Next, import the files created by DVDxDV into Final Cut Pro. In this example, the audio channels are placed in the following order, channel one is the left front channel, channel two is the center front channel, channel three is the right front channel, channel 4 is the left rear channel, channel five is the right rear channel, and channel 6 is the low frequency effects channel.
